Restoring the car of your dreams is going to take time and patience. Once you have the car that you are going to restore what are the steps to take? A big job like this needs careful planning so we’ll try to give you an outline of how to go about the restoration.
Begin with a thorough visual inspection of the car. With a notebook in hand walk around the car and carefully note the following points. Look for rust spots in the bodywork, bubbling paint, holes in the metal, the rubber around the windows and doors. Inside the car check for holes in the carpet, missing plastic, seat tears, damage to the roof, worn seat belts, gauges that do not work etc. Write everything down in your notebook.
Now inspect the chrome on bumpers, handles, and emblems and note any pitting or damage. Check to see if the doors open smoothly or crack or sqeak. Look into the trunk and check the floor for rust holes and the tail lights for faulty wiring. Listen for any unusual noises as you open and close the trunk that may indicate damage to the hinges.
Now lets take a look under the hood. Any oil, water or gas leaks should be fairly obvious but bad repair work may not be so hard to spot. Inspect any wiring and the battery connections. As you did in the trunk listen for noises or squeaking that indicate damaged hinges.
Lastly check out the plastic parts on the car and ensure they are not cracked or dull then check the headlight and sidelight housings.
Make sure you have batteries in your camera for the next step!
