When customising your vehicle a great paint job and modifying the specs will get you some attention but customising is not complete without a set of flashy chrome rims. Rims are the devices connecting the tires to the axle. Most are made from an alloy of aluminium and magnesium although there are other materials used. Rims vary in their widths, from wide for large trucks to narrow for motorcycles and bikes. Wide rims are more stable but do produce more vibration which can be uncomfortable. Narrower rims are less stable and give poorer handling.
What makes rims so sought after? They serve a practical purpose in attaching the wheels to the vehicle but they can also enhance the overall good looks of the vehicle. Some rims are painted to match the vehicle but most people like the look of decorative, shiny chrome plated rims. Chrome plating is also used on other parts of the vehicle for example bumpers, mirrors and exhausts and the brilliant shine catches the eye and is aesthetically very pleasing. Popularised by artists and celebrities and artists chrome rims serve no practical purpose that can’t be achieved from standard rims and can cost as much as $2000 per rim. The best rims are made from a steel and aluminium alloy and are superior to all steel wheels as they are lighter and therefore give better car performance. Aluminium is very light and when alloyed with steel or magnesium gives a light rim that improves the steering ability of the vehicle. Chrome rims are more expensive than metal wheels covered with a silver finish as the electroplating process takes much longer and is more involved.
Caring for Alloy Rims
Maintain your chrome plated rims and other parts by using car shampoo in water and washing with a sponge. Rinse off well and dry with a soft cloth. If necessary use a cleaner specially made for chrome as other types of cleaner can cause damage. Once you have dried them add a protective layer of car wax. Any dust or dirt will stick to the wax instead of the chrome and will make cleaning easier. Avoid using car washes as the detergents used may damage the chrome or could be scratched. Only use cleaners that can be used on chrome finishes as others may contain acid which damages the finish.
